Amanda Martin Quoted on Open Meetings Issue in Brunswick County

A June 18, 2014, article from the State Port Pilot examines the fallout from a Brunswick County principal’s decision to prohibit students from participating in graduation ceremonies based on their attendance records.

Shortly after the incident came to the attention of the superintendent there, he reached out to several school board members. The paper asked SMVT partner Amanda Martin to weigh in on whether the the state’s open meetings laws were violated.

The article writes:

According to North Carolina Press Association attorney Amanda Martin, the issue of whether a violation actually occurred lies in who had the authority to make that decision.

“If the superintendent had the authority to make the decision, and he was just getting input or thoughts from other folks, then I don’t think that’s a vote of the board, and I don’t think that violates the Open Meetings Law,” she said.
